Preserving the history of Britain’s Merchant Fleet

The Understeam Collection

The UnderSteam Collection is one of the UK’s most significant collections of maritime art, documenting the ships of the British Merchant Navy during the age of steam.

With more than 1,450 artworks, the collection captures a period when British merchant steam vessels were at the heart of global trade and maritime innovation. Many of the works depict ships at sea, alongside scenes of the ports and harbours that supported Britain’s maritime trade.

Together, they offer a vivid visual record of the vessels that powered Britain’s maritime economy, and the seafaring heritage that shaped our relationship with the sea.

DISCOVER BRITAIN'S MARITIME HISTORY

Through exhibitions, partnerships and digital access, we share our collection with audiences across the UK and beyond. Each artwork helps bring to life the history of the merchant fleet and the wider maritime world, from the engineering achievements of steam-powered ships to the global routes they sailed and the stories of those onboard.

Our aim is simple: to make this remarkable collection accessible to a diverse audience, inspiring curiosity and deepening understanding of Britain’s maritime past, while strengthening connections with its maritime future.

We welcome enquiries from museums, galleries and individuals to discuss how the UnderSteam collection could enhance your events.
